Jubilee Street Party – Sunday 3rd June

Horsington Village Jubilee Street Party
Everyone is welcome at the Horsington Village Jubilee party

Nearly 300 tickets have been sold for the Horsington and South Cheriton Jubilee Street Party, which promises to be a great event. It’s not too late to book if you want to come, but the organisers need to know by Friday at 6pm in order to ensure there is enough to eat and drink. If you need tickets, email halfmoon@horsington.co.uk, or telephone the pub – 01963 370140.

The road will be closed, but there will be disabled access  only to the pub car park. The best advice is to walk.

The event kicks off at 12 noon with a Jubilee peal of bells from the parish church.

Please try to be seated as early as possible so that the event can run smoothly.

There will be a beef and hog roast. You are welcome to bring you own wine, although a drink from the pub is included in the price, and the bar is open all afternoon.

The legendary band “The Rattlin Boys” will be playing some old rock n’ roll favourites, backed up by Bragatanga, who feature regularly at the Half Moon.

Monday Cricket Match – The Pilgrim’s revenge?

Last year’s match versus the Tabard Pilgrims from Chiswick, West London, was a cliff hanger, with Horsington pulling off a well deserved victory against gallant opponents. That makes it 1-all, as they lost the previous year.

So who will win the decider in the third year of this  exciting annual competition on Monday June 4th ?

Horsington has a full team who have been practicing for weeks (Oh yeah? –Ed), and the Tabard Pilgrims are on fine form, having won their last 2 matches – or so they say, but their website is strangely silent about their last fixture on 27 May.

April rain and May sunshine have helped Rob Hoddinott prepare a stunning pitch.

First ball 2.30 Monday. Should be great spectator sport.

Meet the teams in the in the Half Moon afterwards. Usual food menu available.

Changes at the parish council.

Charles James has been elected deputy chairman of the parish Council. Charles has worked tirelessly on improvements to the pond and the maintenance of the stream, and has been “mentioned in dispatches” in previous blog posts. June Woods continues as chair.

Jackie Pyne steps down as deputy chair, and should be thanked for her hard work in this difficult task.

Clash of the titans at the village hall

Thursday 7th June looks like an exciting evening. According to the revered “Villager” Magazine on this day at 7.30 in the evening, there is a Parish Council Meeting. No surprises there then.

However, on the same date, at the same time, at the same venue, the Womens’ Institute is holding its skittle evening. Should be a great chance to enjoy good sport and see local democracy at work. At least Jackie Pyne, who chairs the WI and is also a member of the parish council, can attend both meetings without a conflict of interest

We wonder if the ladies could be persuaded to move their competition to the Half Moon, which at least has a skittle alley, in order to preserve the peace of the parish.

Parish Council – change at the top?

The only item of significance on the agenda of the Horsington Parish Council Meeting on Thursday May 10 is the election of the chairman and vice chairman, although to be politically correct we ought to call them “chairs”, as the present incumbents, June Woods and Jackie Pyne are clearly not men.

The village will hold its breath to see whether white or black smoke rises from the Sistine Chapel, a.k.a the  village hall , to indicate whether we have a change in management, or if it’s just  business as usual.

The current team have done a grand job, but maybe it’s time for a change. We will let you know.

The meeting is open to all,  and there is an open forum as usual. 7.30, Village Hall.

The party of the century – be there! -Sunday 3rd June

Horsington Village Jubilee Street Party
Everyone is welcome at the Horsington Village Jubilee party

The mighty organization behind the Jubilee street party is now in full swing. Andrew Tarling and Phil Bennett have been distributing tickets in between the showers, and volunteers are coming out of the woodwork to lend a hand.  There will be a beef and hog roast (local produce from Chris Bailward), a barbecue for Children, and live music.
The tickets cost a very reasonable £10, (including beverages, we understand) or £5 for children. Any surplus will be used to create a monument of the event, and a time capsule, to be buried in the village.

More volunteers are needed, so please offer to help

What’s in that Time Capsule? – Competition

Time Capsule
Suggestions wanted

According to “The Villager” Magazine, they are going to bury a time capsule to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee, and dig it up in 60 years time, when most of the pupils of Horsington School will be looking forward to their pensions. No details have been given of the size of this thing, or what is going in it.

Apart from the latest “Villager” and a copy of the “Blackmore Vale Magazine”, what else should the capsule contain?

A Half Moon Menu? The Ploughman’s lunch, currently a stiff £9.95 will have future viewers of the capsule rolling around with laughter, marvelling at how cheap it was to live in Jubilee year. Assuming inflation at 5 per cent, the humble ploughman’s at the Half Moon will cost a staggering £177.45 in 60 years time.

Want a pint to wash it down? London Pride? That’ll be £62.76 sir. Or, if you prefer, 3 Swiss francs.

In 60 years time, the average Horsington hovel will cost about £7.8 million, just about enough to fill a tank with central heating oil and a bit left over for some petrol to drive to the Mid-West Mammoth Shopperama  mall complex in  Wincary, the new conurbation which smothered Wincanton and Castle Cary following the relaxation of planning laws.

Petrol will be rationed then, but not to worry, we will all be able to plug our electric cars into the power points at Horsington Manor geriatric home, whose acres will be entirely covered in solar panels, visible from the new “affordable housing” estates on the moon.

They might also include an IKEA catalogue, so in 60 years time people will be able to see what the furniture they take to Ottery Antiques to be repaired and restored looked like when new. Such style, such quaint names. Bengt! Or was it Böd?

What do you think should go in the Time capsule? The Blog will award a ticket to the Half Moon Beer Festival for the most amusing suggestion.

And no doubt the committee will take into account any serious suggestions.
