Horsington’s champions launch a cheesy Christmas hamper

Marcus Fergusson in his Cheese Room at feltham’s Farm

Horsington’s champion cheesemakers atFeltham’s Farm are launching an exclusive limited edition Supreme Champions Hamper in collaboration with the Virtual Cheese Awards and Keen’s Cheddar.

The hamper will feature the three supreme  cheese champions since the awards began – Feltham’s Farm’s Renegade Monk (2020) and La Fresca Margarita (2021), plus  Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar (2022).

The hamper includes 220g+ portions of the three winning cheeses, two packs of luxury biscuits from Bath producer The Fine Cheese Company, and a 126g jar of blackberry chutney from local Somerset producers The Jam Shed in Lytes Cary, or a quince jelly from the Somerset Membrillo company.

The price for this hamper is £38 including P&P to the UK (excluding Highlands and Islands). The Supreme Champions Hamper is available from Today.

Oder online from www.felthamsfarm.com. A great Christmas gift for distant friends and rellies?

All three Supreme Champions come from within five miles of each in the Blackmore Vale.

Feltham’s Farm’s cheeses , produced by Penny Nagle and Marus fergusson, are non-traditional organic interpretations of continental cheeses Epoisse (Renegade Monk) and Queso Fresco (La Fresca Margarita). Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar is a fifth-generation recipe for that most traditional of British cheeses, cheddar.

These three Supreme Champion cheeses celebrate the diversity of artisan British cheesemaking, not to mention the extraordinarily good milk and cheese which is produced in the Blackmore Vale; “the silicon valley of cheese”.

The Virtual Cheese Awards were established in 2020 by Sarah de Wit, a cheese expert who spent more than 15 years managing cheese and dairy quality and innovation at Asda.

Now in its fourth year, the VCA’s are the only cheese awards where all the judging is conducted live online for everyone to see.

About the Cheeses.
Renegade Monk
is a soft, blue, organic, ale-washed cow’s cheese with a strong flavour

It was crowned Supreme Champion, Best British Cheese in the inaugural Virtual Cheese Awards 2020, and won a Gold at the Mondial du Fromage in Tours, France 2021.

Using artisan techniques on a newly developed recipe, Renegade Monk is made from organic, pasteurised cow’s milk while the set curd is then hand washed in organic ale every few days as the cheese matures

Cheesemaker, Marcus Fergusson deliberately created a cheese of a style not traditionally found in Britain – but rather a cheese inspired by a range of Continental cheeses. It is most often compared to an Epoisses, but with an added hint of (occasionally visible) blue.

La Fresca Margarita. An organic “Queso Fresco” inspired by travels in Spain, and Latin America. It is available Salted and Unsalted. It’s a lemony, fresh cheese, which is equally good drizzled with honey (as developed  at Durslade Farmshop with their homegrown Somerset honey) and figs (the unsalted version), or used as a filling in a Mexican tacos (the salted one). It’s also great for cheesecakes.

Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar. This multi award winning Traditional Unpasteurised Cheddar was crowned Supreme Champion in Virtual Cheese Awards 2022. Cheddar has been made by the Keen family on Moorhayes Farm since 1899.. The Cheese is smooth on the tongue and long on the pallet. The truckles are clothbound and matured for more than 18 months giving a rich creamy flavour with a hint of citrus to finish.

The Supreme Champions hamper will be available to buy online from www.felthamsfarm.com

Three years at the White Horse

The Blog sends greetings to Andy and Justine at the White Horse, South Cheriton, who celbrate 3 years at this excellent local pub.

With pubs closing all around us (The Old Inn at Holton was the latest to go), the “White” remains an oasis of good beer, wine and food for anyone wanting a good night our locally.

They have invested massively in a new kitchen and refurbished the old skittle alley into a dining and performance area. They kept open during the lockdown, at considerable personal cost.

The pub opens duringthe day from Thursday to Sunday, and in the evening from Wednesday to Sunday.

Food is served at lunchtime on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and on Wednesday to Saturday evenings (6-8.30)pm. Sunday lunch is available from 12-3. Thursday is burger night.

There is a popular quiz on the second Sunday of every month. The next one is this Sunday , 9 October. Teams of up to 5, £1 a head, and the winning team takes the pot.

As the Blog has said many times :” Use it or lose it”

See The Pub’s website for more info.

Bailward invades East Germany

Chris Bailward’s epic summer cycle ride (now an annual event) continues.

He left Horsington on the 21 st September, cycled through France and Belgium across the battlefields of 2 world wars and entered Germany last week.

If you have been following him on www.bailward.co.uk, (as we hope you are), you will know he is now in what was East Germany and heading for Dresden, a most interesting city.

His target is \Berlin, where he is being met by son Tom, and they will drive back home together.

A great effort. We look forward to welcoming you home. Safe riding.

The old East German border, once guarded by watch towers and barbed wire

He’s off again

Chris Bailward is finally off to Berlin on his bike. He planned to go in 2020 but Covid took care of that and, instead he circumnavigated Wales. Travelling abroad in 2021 was still unwise so he cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End. Finally in 2022 all looks fair for a 900 mile trip through France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany, visiting the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium, the historic cites of Cologne, Leipzig and Dresden and culminating in a three day sightseeing tour of Berlin and Potsdam before returning by car. He starts on 21st September with an 80 mile ride to Portsmouth to catch a ferry to Ouistreham in France. Follow his journey daily at bailward.co.uk

What’s in that old Barn?

The Wincanton History Society is very honoured to have author Joe Rogers coming to talk to us about Tithe Barns in Somerset and Dorset. This should be a really interesting subject and will help us all to know what we are looking at, when we are driving round the countryside and see a tithe barn.  The talk starts at 7pm on Wednesday 28th September in the Balsam Centre, and we look forward to seeing you and your friends there for the talk, a glass of wine and a piece of  cake, and of  course the chance to talk to other people interested in history

Come and shine with Milborne Port Opera

Open evening on September 8th

The Merry Widow

Perhaps you’ve enjoyed watching Milborne Port opera’s shows or one of their social media posts has caught your eye – but have you ever considered joining?  If you’ve never trodden the boards before, it’s not too late to start.  Milborne Port Opera are currently looking to welcome performers for their next show, The Yeomen of the Guard, which will be performed in April 2023.  Rehearsals start in September and continue weekly from 8pm-10pm on Thursdays in Milborne Port.

Come along to MPO’s “Open Evening” from 8pm on Thursday 8th September at Milborne Port Primary School for an introduction to the group and how they work. You will also have a chance to sing along with the others  If you’d like to know more, email secretary@milborneportopera.co.uk or leave a message on the Milborne Port Opera Facebook page.

When a group of friends and colleagues got together to perform in a one-off charity concert, who would have guessed that more than thirty years later they would still be in existence as an award-winning company performing light opera and musicals to appreciative Somerset audiences?

That first concert was a semi-staged version of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury, and Milborne Port Opera, as the group was soon named, has gone on to perform every one of the G and S operettas, from much-loved works like The Pirates of Penzance and Iolanthe to the almost-forgotten Utopia Limited.  Along the way, MPO has brought audiences more fun-filled operetta from the likes of Lehar and Strauss, premiered three comic works by a talented member of the group, and branched out into the world of musicals with stand-out shows such as Sondheim’s Into the Woods and Cole Porter’s Anything Goes. Numerous awards have been presented to MPO from the Somerset Fellowship of Drama.

One of the most remarkable features of Milborne Port Opera is that the company creates its own venue every year, transforming Milborne Port Village Hall into a versatile theatrical space.  In the early days, the Village Hall had no stage, and the shoe-string performances were somewhat rough and ready, staged on a low platform with minimal scenery.  What a difference thirty years of gradual innovation can make!  These days the Village Hall boasts a “small but perfectly formed” stage, which MPO extends forward, creating sensational scenery year after year.  A full lighting rig is installed, tiered seating goes in for the audience, the wonderful orchestra tunes up and they’re ready for show time!

Come along and be part of it. It’s great fun and you will make some good friends.
