Bailward’s bike busts in Cheltenham but he hits Trowbridge on time

Chris Bailward outside the Council House, Bristol.

Chris Bailward, Cycling back and forth across England in aid of Sport relief, has now completed 21 days in the saddle, and was last heard of in Trowridge on his easterly leg towards London and Kent.

He had a hiccup in Cheltenham, where his gears disintegrated, but he was uninjured, and repairs were made with only a morning’s loss of time.

When we say “last heard of”, anyone with an eagle eye might have spotted him in Horsington, because he spent Tuesday night at home, having been collected and re-delivered to Trowbridge by son Rob.

He will be intrigued to learn that the Tuesday night regulars in the Half Moon were wondering where he was. If only they knew. . .

Chris is continuing eastwards towards Tunbridge Wells, before hitting the south coast and heading west for Devon & Cornwall.

Rattlin’ Boys gig at the Half Moon raises cash for the pond

Ted Banks reports. . .
There was an absolutely fantastic turn out at the Half Moon on Saturday night (over 200 bodies)and friends old and new that “THE RATTLERS” had not seen for years…AND the Half Moon has not been that packed out since we last played there !!! Anyway Mr Editor, I had the idea( as it was a free gig) to go round the audience and do a bucket collection of people’s loose change for The Horsington Pond renovation ! We collected the princely sum of £82:85 .Could you please notify who is ever in charge, that that sum is awaiting to be collected from the 1/2 moon, towards that cause .Many thanks.

Well done, and thanks to everyone. CHARLES, go and collect!

If anyone took any photos, email them to editor@Idnet.com

10 days in the saddle – Chris plugs on

Ten Days in, and Chris is somewhere south of Liverpool
Ten Days in, and Chris is somewhere south of Liverpool

We have lost touch with Chris Bailward, but readers of his excellent blog will know that he was last heard of in High Peak on Thursday night, 9 June, and tonight, if all goes according to plan he will be somewhere near Bangor on Dee, a few miles south of where he was 5 days ago, but having traversed the Pennines twice during the intervening days.

Chris has covered around 600 out of his 2016 miles, so he still has a long way to go. On Saturday he turns south, then east, heading towards Uttoxter and Oakham on his epic journey in aid of Sport Relief.

If you haven’t already done so, please donate. If you have, thanks.

You can read all about it on his blog. There will be no more reports on the Horsington Blog until the middle of the week after next.

Village fete news!

Thanks to Penny Nagle, who contacted us, we have news of the Fete-or at least a small part of it.

Penny is running a “Vintage and Egg” sale this Saturday at the Fete.  100% of proceeds will go to the school.  Two parts of this:

(1) Please bring in for Friday : –

– anything good and second hand that you think will sell (this includes books, clothes, earthenware, furniture)

– any eggs (there is a nice side line in eggs for sale she feels)

– any other produce that you think will sell – Penny has  10 x bags of home grown, organic mixed salad leaves (mizuna, rocket, pak choi, mibuna).  So anything else that is ready and good to go – rhubarb, honey, small bale hay bales.   If it’s perishable find Penny on the day.

2) Silent Auction for 2 x Cinema Tickets to see David Suchet in the award winning “Importance of Being Earnest” on Wednesday 29th June at 19.00.  The auction will be running on Saturday afternoon and the winner will be announced at 5pm by text.  All proceeds of course to the school.

So there you are – these two, plus the pond presentation are reason enough to go. But we are sure there is plenty more going on.

But don’t ell the editor! He’s going on holiday. Ed

More comments on the Music Festival

Robin Worsley writes:

In reply to Charles James regarding the Defibrillator. Everybody locally must have seen all the posters and been aware it was going happen when and where but there was nothing to say WHY  which to most people is the very relevant. Had there been a small banner across John’s signs saying  IN AID OF THE DEFIBRILLATOR there might have  been a better turnout.

All is not lost. For those of us who do not wish to subject ourselves to potentially a lot of loud music tell us how we can contribute!!

Dear Charles

Thank you for the useful information about the defibrillator.  I wasn’t aware of the ongoing and future expected costs, so that is good to know.  Obviously an excellent cause.  The only point I would like to make about the music festival is that the local advertising (the wooden boards up around the village, and the blackboard outside the pub) didn’t mention that the event was in aid of defibrillator funds, so it’s possible that people didn’t realise.

Yours

The Editor comments: I think you both have a point. Hopefully next time some people will volunteer to help John. He did a fantastic job putting the event together, but without any assistance on tasks like publicity , blogging and canvassing etc.

Raising money for the pond project – some ideas

We asked readers to submit fundraising ideas. Hear are some very useful ones from Steve Gleghorn in South Cheriton. Thanks Steve.

Dear Editor,
A few suggestions on how to raise the money

  1.  A one off precept (ring-fenced) on the Parish community charge, which would by my rough calculation cost each household between £15  to £40 per year
  2. Everyone who donates (say £10 or over) gets a certificate allowing then the right to sail a small toy boat (max length 18inches) on the pond. A competition for the best boat to be held once a year. The Certificate could be designed in an old fashioned English script and I’m sure many would cherish it and have it framed.
  3.  Has anyone approached the following people for a donation?
    •                                 South West water
    •                                 Lottery Funding
    •                                 Natural England
    •                                 EU Grants       http://www.eubusiness.com/funding
  4.  Bring and Bid Bric-a-brac sale in the village hall. I know I’ve got a lot of rubbish in my garage!!
  5. Take a look at this website if no-one has already                          http://freshwaterhabitats.org.uk/habitats/pond/pond-clinic/funding-pond-project/
  6. This makes interesting reading and may spark a few ideas   http://childrey.org.uk/village-pond/

I hope this helps.

It certainly does – We have passed them on to Charles -Ed

District Council backs pond scheme – but residents will need to contribute too

Horsington Pond in happier times
Horsington Pond has potential, but this is going too far!

Horsington parish councilors Ian Snowdon and Charles James attended the Area East meeting of South Somerset District Council on Wednesday 8th June, to put the case for partial funding for the Horsington pond project through a community development grant.

The project team has been given good advice, support and encouragement from Tim Cook, the community development officer,  from the very beginning. With his presentation plus Ian and Charles, and with the  support from  ward councillors Tim Inglefield and William Wallace,  the parish council has been awarded £5,000 towards the cost of the project. The vote in favour was unanimous.

This will cover around 40% of the total costs so there is still a long way to go but we are on the way to achieving the funding for this village-enhancing project.

Charles James said “I am very excited and pleased that we are at this stage. We (the parish council) will be standing at the village fete on Saturday so please do come along and see the details and encourage or criticise (as I am sure some will) as you see fit!”

The question now is how to raise the extra £7 thousand or so?

Have a think and tell the councillors at the Fete on Saturday – or tell the Blog editor@idnet.com

The village fete is on Saturday 11th June. No-one involved has told the Blog anything about it, so we’re not able to tell you much. -Ed

South Cheriton Music Festival and the defibrillator

Charles James,  on behalf of the H.A.D.A team, writes . . .

A huge effort was again made by John Sansom to organise and run the latest village festival. Knowing the costs that John incurred with advertising, the cost of his staff to erect and take down all the marquees (that he provided free of charge), the costs of the bands and the other costs involved, and knowing what was taken on the gate, I would estimate that this event was subsidised by John’s personal finances.

It is a great shame that such hard work was so poorly supported by the villagers.

The event was run to add to the coffers for the Defibrillator fund.

Previous events were keenly supported by the village to raise the initial costs to purchase and install the defibrillator.

However there are ongoing costs involved. It costs on average £300 per year to keep the village emergency telephone system running, coupled with biannual first aid refreshers for the responder team, replacement defibrillator pads and batteries.

Take into consideration that our existing defibrillator has a finite life span, so we can look at the need to replace the defibrillator in the next five years. Our present funds will support the ongoing costs of our existing defibrillator for that period of time; however it will leave us with a surplus of less than £100.

We will need to raise the purchase costs of a replacement defibrillator within that timescale or be without one.

Now you may well feel that we do not need a defibrillator, BUT if you or someone you know needs one, and it is not there, then this could well be a matter of “life or death” for that person!

If these events are not better supported in the future, and our bank balance not increased to replace the defibrillator when needed, then we will loose it at the end of its life span.

This would be a huge shame after the effort taken to set up and run the existing scheme so successfully.

Please do support us in the future, and a big thank you to those of you that did on Saturday.

The Rattlin’ Boys are back at the Half Moon

signpost2Keep next Saturday Night Free. The Rattlin’ Boys, featuring Phil Warren, Ted Banks, Kevin Wagland and Ed Parker are returning to the Half Moon for one final, final, absolutely last  ever performance. Yes, we’ve heard it before, and no doubt we’ll hear it again. But its not to be missed.

The Rattlers are heading a line up of 3 bands . Quickslver, plus another. Saturday June 11 – from 8 pm.

South Cheriton Music Festival has them rockin’ and rollin’

The field behind the White Horse, South Cheriton was transformed into a mini Glastonbury on Saturday for the first-ever South Cheriton Music Festival and craft Fair.

A very good line up of bands and solo singers entertained the crowd, and there was an excellent bar and refreshments.

The event was thoroughly enjoyed by those who attended. But it is a pity that more people could not be bothered to support the show, which was staged to raise funds for the defibrillator.

John Samson and his team erected a wonderful array of tents and marquees to create a really good arena, with plenty of shelter in the case of bad weather.

We hope he will repeat the exercise next year. Please support him, and we will have a great and enjoyable event of which we can all be proud.
