Chicken course on September 3rd at Empire Farm, Templecombe

Sally Morgan will teach you about keeping a few chickens in your garden

A lot of topics are covered, including the different types of egg-laying chicken and where you can buy them, housing and runs – various options and the pros and cons of each, feeding your chickens, disease, worming, dealing with mites and lice, protecting your chickens from the fox, introducing new chickens, as well as handling chickens and clipping their wings.

The course lasts three hours, morning courses start at 10 am and finish about 1 pm, while afternoon courses start at 2 pm and finish at about 5 pm. Part of the session is spent outside looking at the chicken pens. Outdoor shoes or boots are advisable, with a change of footwear for inside the teaching room. Everybody gets to take away a set of notes and some fresh eggs. Children are welcome.

The price includes all tuition, course notes, light lunch and refreshments during the day. Adults are £30, and children under 15 years of age £12. A ticket for a family group of two adults and up to 3 children is £65.

Empire farm is an organic farm which specialises in education – butchery, smallholding, preserving including cider (Silas Silage please note), and gundog training. There a loads of different courses.
