Winter treat from Wincanton Choral Society

Christmas concert The Wincanton Choral Society Winter Concert on Sunday 9th December promises to be a wonderful treat.

This choir (including several Horsington residents) gets better and better. We are very priveleged to have the sort of music that people pay a fortune for at the Albert Hall a mere five minute ride away in Wincanton.

This year’s offering is Vivaldi’s Gloria followed by the more peaceful and beautifully melodic Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure.   There will be three pieces from Vaughan Williams lively Cantata for Mixed Voices. In Windsor Forest, with familiar Christmas carols for choir and audience to round off the evening. . The soloists are Maria Marton, soprano and Sarah Pottinger, mezzo soprano.

The conductor is Simon Twiselton. The accompaniment will be Piano played by Jacquelyn Bevan, and  a String Quintet with Edward Burns 1st Violin, Jane Margeson 2nd Violin, Richard Willetts Viola, Michael Moorsom Violoncello and Keith Wood Double Bass.

Tickets can be obtained through www.bradsons.co.uk or 01749 838843, or best of all, buy them from Jane Jones- 01963 370562

Tickets are £12.00 (18 and under £6.00) or at the door   Licensed Bar.

7.30pm at Wincanton Sports Centre, West Hill.

Another Quiz night -21st October

Half Moon
Sunday 21st October sees another pub charity quiz at the Half Moon. Usual rules – teams of 4 -(ish) 8pm. These quizzes are very popular, although the last one was marred by suggestions of cheating. We urge participants to leave their mobile phones at home, and for Andrew to turn off the pub’s Wi-Fi during the quiz.

Ploughmans, puddings and “Call my Bluff” – 6th October

This Saturday, 6th October, is the Harvest Supper in the Village Hall.  Guests are promised Ploughman’s and puddings, which sounds like a load of delicious cheeses and some lovely home made puds.

The organisers do not say whether drink will be provided, so the Blog’s advice (we always err on the side of caution) is to take your own. You can always donate it as part of the harvest!

The after dinner entertainment is Agricultural Implements “Call My Bluff”. The mind boggles. Best to take a safety helment and some wellies.

The evening begins at 7pm . Set the video to record  Strictly, and get down there.

Pub quiz – Sunday 23 September

A Musical afternoon with Parson Woodforde in Horsington Church – Sunday 16 September

Following their sell-out success at Stock Gaylard in July, the Trio Violetta are reprising their  Parson Woodforde concert in Horsington Parish Church on 16 September in aid of the roof fund. Apart from being entertained by some delightful music,  the audience can expect a wonderful cream tea to be served after the concert.

Trio Voiletta is a string ensemble comprising Sylvie Barry, Frances Eustace and Janet Coles, all Horsington/Templecombe residents. They will  play music by Haydn, Boccherini and Oswald, with  Richard Gaunt  assuming the character of the parson and providing readings from his diaries.

Parson Woodforde was an 18th century, Castle Cary-born cleric who kept a diary for 45 years. Obviously a good bloke, they named a pub after him!

His diary provides a unique insight into rural life in 18th century Somerset, and Horsington in particular.

Fantastic cream tea on offer after concert

Cream Tea
It’s what we call a “serving suggestion”

Cream tea lovers can indulge their wildest dreams on Sunday September 16th at Horsington Parish Church.

However, to take part, they must first listen to a concert of 18th Century music punctuated by readings from the famous diaries of Parson Woodforde, who was born in Castle Cary, and who spent some time in Horsington, as you will find out if you attend.
Indulgence has its price, but it’s worth it.
