Winter must be nearly over. The popular Half Moon curry nights (two for a tenner) are coming to an end. The last supper for the present season is on Tuesday 26 February.
Andrew has not revealed what his next masterstroke will be, but we hear rumours of impending change and innovation. Watch this space.
Military Historian Richard Mead is giving a talk on Sunday 10th March on the glittering career of General Sir Richard McCreery, a notable former Horsington resident.
Sir Richard exaggerated his age in order to join up for the First World War. He served in the Lancers, survived a wounding (for which he received an MC), and in WW2 went on to command armoured divisions in France and the Middle East.
He was chief of staff to General Alexander, and commanded the 8th Army in Italy, as well as the post-war British Army on the Rhine.
Mead’s book “The Last Great Cavalryman” recalls General McReery’s exploits in detail, and these form the substance of his most interesting talk.
4pm, Parish Church. Cream tea lovers can expect to be well-rewarded, as well as entertained. £8 donation to the roof fund, please.
The popular Horsington Village Dinner is on Saturday March 16th. The theme this year is St Patrick’s Day, so brush up on your Irish Jokes, jigs and step dancing. No jokes about the bogs, after the dreadful winter we have had on the Marsh.
The cost at £12.50 a head, to include a starter and main course (what else but Paddy’s pate and Irish Stew), is the same as last year. Bring your own pudding, wine or Guinness.

The Ladies Lunch Group for people who live in Horsington and South Cheriton meets on the first Monday of the month.
On Monday 4th February, they are going to the Ship at West Stour.
Then they will be lunching at the (recently refurbished) Red Lion, Kilmington on Monday 4th March and at the White Hart in Sherborne on Monday 8th April (the first Monday in April is a bank holiday).

The friendly and relaxed Half Moon Music Night kicks off the New Year on Wednesday the 2nd of January at around 8.45 p.m. in Horsington. Please come and join us to play, sing and say whilst enjoying a beer; it is completely free apart from the drinks. Further details from Anna 01963-370749.
Whether you favour the Half Moon or the White Horse, please give them your support this Christmas. We are lucky to live in villages with good pubs and excellent licensees, and in these hard times we should not take them for granted.
As usual, they will be working hard for your pleasure. We asked both pubs to let us know what is happening this Christmas and New Year. We are still waiting to hear from the White Horse, but here is the Half Moon’s programme:
Sunday 23 December: Lunchtime Carvery as usual. An excuse to get out of the kitchen! Christmas Eve: Carols and mince pies from 8pm, with accompaniment by the Horsington Marsh Chamber Orchestra (Janet Coles and Brian Tunnicliffe)
Christmas Day: A quick pint from midday -2pm. The annual ritual of showing off your new M&S jersey and –oops -spilling a drink down it.
Sunday 30 December: Come and pit your brains against Horsington’s finest in the last quiz of 2012. 8pm. Teams of 4-(ish). Leave your mobile phone at home.
New Years Eve : closed all day .
New Year’s day: Delicious brunch from midday- 3pm. Bar closes at 4pm.
Wednesday 2nd January. Music Night 8 pm.
Until 30 January: Balvenie Whisky promotion. Enjoy three different delicious upmarket Balvenie malts for £8.95 and receive a free Monkey Shoulder*.
