Attention all golfers (and aspirant golfers) at all levels. Put Monday 27th October in your diary. It’s the date of second charity HORSINGTON OPEN golf tournament, to be played at Folke Golf Centre, near Sherborne, a 20-minute drive away from Horsington. The tournament is a 9-hole 4-ball competition.

As the title implies, it is open to all, including ladies and non handicappers. The entry fee is £12.50 per player and the proceeds will be donated to local charities.

Tee off is from 10 am.  The prize giving will be at the Half Moon at 6.30 when the coveted Claret Jug trophy will be awarded to the winner. There will be plenty of other prizes.

There will also be a raffle in aid of the charities.

You will be welcomed with coffee and a bacon roll, and a light lunch will be available to those requiring it.

If you would like to sponsor a golf prize or donate a raffle prize please contact Richard Gaunt, who is organising the competition with George Wagland and Phil Bennett.

Musical thrills them in Yeovil

The Blog’s drama critic, Walter Plinge writes. . .

Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society (YAOS) are currently staging the musical thriller – almost a melodrama – Jekyll & Hyde. A talented cast of singers, actors and musicians wrings every ounce of high drama and pathos from this classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale of a chemically-induced split personality (or the battle between good and evil –Ed) . There are some great show-stopping numbers and some amazing performances from the principals, especially Jekyll/Hyde and Lucy Harris, his ill-fated love interest.

Staging and musical direction are superb, as you would expect from a company with professional standards and big budgets.

Worth seeing. Octagon Theatre, Yeovil, 7.30, until Saturday 11th October

New date for Village Supper – 8th November

John Macdonald, chair of the village hall committee writes . . .

Due to unforeseen consequences the Village Hall dinner has had to be postponed. The new date for the dinner will be the 8th of November. We are hoping for our usual numbers of supporters of upwards of sixty people. We will be providing the usual fare. There will be a starter, the main course is going to be casserole and puddings will be provided. As the date is near Guy Fawkes day the suggestion for the theme of the evening is ‘sparklers’. We are aiming for ticket prices of £12.50 person. (No inflation over our last occasion). There will be raffle and all the proceeds of dinner and raffle will go towards Village Hall funds. The Village Hall is a charity run by volunteers and although our day-to-day costs are generally covered by our regular users we need to bolster our funds for things such as as the recent maintenance and decoration of the outside of the building. Bookings can be made and tickets will be available from John Macdonald on 01963 370444”.

Come along, meet your neighbours and  catch up on the latest gossip. This is normally a great  occasion and an opportunity for newcomers to meet the village – Ed

Utopia: still some seats left for Saturday

utopia-poster“Utopia” at Milborne Port Village hall seems to be going down very well, judging by the comments.

Thursday was a sell out, and Friday is fairly full. But there are still tickets for the last night on Saturday, which is often regarded as the best night.

This is probably your only chance to see this rarely-performed comic opera.

Utopia comes to Milborn Port after Easter

utopia-posterThe award-winning Milborne Port Opera’s next offering ”Utopia Limited” (April 23-26) will delight  anyone who  believes our present situation has been caused by the antics of bankers, politicians, financiers and the absurdities of health and safety bureaucrats.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera is a satire about  finance, royalty, bankruptcy,  celebrity media and the mafia. It revolves around the small South Pacific island of Utopia’s attempts to turn itself into a limited company – with the help of British management consultants. En route, it also takes a swipe at the British Empire, overseas aid, The Lord Chamberlain (plays were censored by him right up to the 1968) and courtship rituals.

The Milborne Port production team have sharpened its satirical edge with some judicious re-writes and updating, which makes it as relevant today as it was to Victorian audiences. In fact it will leave you with the feeling that nothing much has changed.

It is one of G&S’s less well-known works. “ Utopia Limited” is Gilbert and Sullivan’s penultimate collaboration, and it the only G & S opera which has yet to be performed by the Milborne Port company.

Utopia stars its regular singers, including Horsington residents Richard Gaunt, playing the King of Utopia, and Chris Bailward.

Musical director Caroline d’Cruz conducts the talented orchestra. Stand by for a cracking evening.

The show runs at the Milborne Port Village Hall from April 23-26, the week after Easter. Tickets from boxoffice@milborneportopera.co.uk Telephone 07926 983585.
