Church service change – 31 July

Please note: Originally, the United Service on 31 July was to be in Templecombe, and the last one should have been in Horsington. But because of the works taking place in Horsington Church they had to swap. So the United Service on 31 July is in Horsington Church and not Templecombe.

Chris is back – 1 stone lighter!

He's reached Corwall
He’s reached Corwall

Chris Bailward has finished his  cycle trek around England in search of County Halls. Well done!

He writes. . .”I’ve been on the road for 30 days, cycling every day for 29 and, by initial estimate, having deducted the 12 miles that I missed because of bike failure at Cheltenham, have cycled 2042 miles. I’ve shed a stone in weight, a tee shirt and a security cable for the bike.

I hope you’ve enjoyed following my journey.  We’re not quite up to the £2016 I had hoped to raise for Sport Relief but there’s still time for you to donate if you haven’t already done so.  Thank you so much to those of you who have already shown such generosity.  It has helped keep me going even when things looked a bit grim. If you’re in the area, come and join me for a drink and chat at the Half Moon Inn, Horsington tomorrow night Friday 1st July from about 7pm.”

Bailward bikes on! – Nearly there.

Chris Bailward’s third* epic cycle ride – 2016 miles back and forth across England in aid of Sport Relief- is nearly over. He was last seen in Exeter and now faces 100 miles across Dartmoor in bloody awful weather to reach Truro in Corwall and complete his mission.

If you have not been following, his mission has been to visit every “county town” – the old or existing administrative headquarters of the  counties- in England, all 48 of them from Carlisle to Truro.  This has involved criss-crossing the Penines several times, and sweeping eastwards and then westward to take in every single county.

Chris Bailward's oddesy - 2016 miles in the saddle
Chris Bailward’s odessy – 2016 miles in the saddle. Ouch!

The Map shows Chris’s route.

This is a fantastic achievement, 80-100 miles a day, totally alone, without support, and apart from a few nights staying with family and friends, enduring local B+Bs and hotels of varying quality. And all at his own expense.

There’s a full account on his fascinating Blog.

All being well, Chris will arrive Back in Horsington on Thursday night, and after a day or R+R will be in the Half Moon, Horsington on Friday night from around 7pm. It would be nice if his many well-wishers and donors could join him, buy him a pint, and welcome him home.

If you have promised to donate and have forgotten, please do it now, or you can sign up in the pub on Friday.

All welcome.

Why Sport Relief?

*He has also cycled from Lands End to John o’Groats(2014)  and a circular  (1800 mile) tour around France (2015).

Make a date with the Pepys Ensemble

If you love cream teas and music, this is for you.

The Pepys Ensemble, which includes Horsington’s Janet Coles on the Cello will be playing in Horsington Church on Sunday July 10th at 3 pm.

The programme will include quartets by Fiala, Mozart and Francaix.

The concert is in aid of Church funds, and you will be provided with a delicious cream tea. You are asked to donate £8.00

The other members of the ensemble are Laura manning (oboe and cor anglais), Sarah Drury (violin) and David Lyon (viola), all professional musicians of some repute.

Janet Coles teaches music at several local schools and also plays in several orchestras. Those who enjoy the annual carol singing at the pub, where she plays the piano, will have a chance to see her in a much more serious and professional role.

The Pepys Ensemble will be playing a different repertoire on Sunday 24 th July at 6 pm in the delightful tiny church at Stock Gaylard.  Tickets for this concert, in aid of Homestart,  from Mrs Langmead 01963 23511

Please write in to support the Horsington Pond project

The project to revitalise Horsington’s pond needs your moral as well as financial support.

Charles James, who is leading the project, is seeking funds from various grant providers, but he needs evidence of support from the village in order to back up his application,

Please take a few moments to send Charles an email  to express your support for the project.

If you are stuck for words, here’s a basic template you can adapt:

“Dear Mr James,

I am writing on behalf of myself and my family to express our  support for the Parish Council’s project to revitalise the Horsington Pond.

The Pond is one of the village’s most valuable amenities, and the scheme put forward by the council is imaginative and also very clever.

It will improve the village and at the same time aid conservation and bio-diversity, and provide a much needed educational resource for the village school.

We hope you will be able to raise the necessary funds, and you may count on our support.

Yours sincerely,”

It’s over. What’s next?

The people have spoken. We’re out.

Results57 per cent of the people in South Somerset voted to leave and have got their way. Such a tiny majority for such a big decision.

Those who voted as a protest or to” give Cameron a bloody nose” will no doubt we getting to grips with reality after a monstrous hangover.

And now it’s up to our political leaders and the Civil Service to manage an orderly exit under the best possible terms. Oh dear.
